Hey Everyone,

I just received my news update from Katherine Albrecht, and was I so happy to hear because of Katherine’s hard work and dedication, she has made lasting changes! And, once again proving that she not only talks the talk, she walks the walk!

To CASPIAN members and supporters:

Hooray!

We have great news for Southwest shoppers: Today 78 Albertsons supermarkets discontinued the much-hated “” frequent shopper card. (For details see the Arizona Republic article below.)

Way to go, ! We knew it was only a matter of time before you would see the light and return those invasive and unnecessary cards to the dust heap of bad ideas.

You may recall that actively opposed the launch of Albertsons card as it was rolled out across the nation in 2001-2003, and that we held protests in Phoenix, Dallas, and Seattle to make the point. Just as we predicted, the program was expensive, invasive, and unwieldy, and it drove countless privacy-loving consumers to shop elsewhere.

You can walk down memory lane with our 2002 press release and a nice article from that time period here:

For an overview of the problem with supermarket cards, you can download the definitive report (pdf):

If you’ve been avoiding Albertsons because of the card (and a lot of people have), now is the time to return to your local Albertsons store and thank them for coming to their senses. And while you’re there, give the manager a handshake for me, will you?

If you’re not in the Southwest and your local Albertsons still has a card, now would be a good time to encourage your regional Albertsons management to follow suit and dump the card there, too.

It pays to be patient.

In freedom,
Katherine Albrecht, Ed.D.
