Younger banking customers are more likely to leave their financial institutions in the event of a security breach, and 43% of U.S. consumers ages 18 to 34 would close their accounts right away. The attitudes of younger generations toward online services present a particular challenge for banks, because young consumers are very comfortable with technology.

The ATM channel is a “very important access point to customers,” and increased functionality appears to be a major component, according to Alan Walsh, VP of Wincor Nixdorf’s (Paterborn, Germany) U.S. banking division. The average bank customer walks into a branch twice a year but uses an ATM 30 times during the same period, Walsh says, citing a survey conducted by the ATM manufacturer.
