No matter how expensive or highly rated an alarm system is, or no matter how many precautions someone takes, a home invasion is always a possibility. When they happen, they can be a frightening and traumatic experience. Yet, as frightening as it may be, focusing on a couple of simple things can help the situation:

Stay calm. As frightened as you are, chances are, the intruders are just as frightened and nervous. The situation is tense and unpredictable, which is why it is imperative for you to stay calm. Speak calmly and move slowly. As long as the invader or invaders think they’re in control of the situation, it gives them less reason to escalate the situation.

Don’t initiate violence. Don’t be tempted to be the hero in the situation. Any sudden movement can be seen as a threat to the invaders, and they are more likely to take extreme measures to defuse the situation. Keep a cool head, and don’t risk your life or the life of your loved ones.

Cooperate. Again, it’s all about control or the semblance thereof. If the invaders think and feel as though they’re in control, they are less likely to resort to violence. Don’t give them that opportunity by not being cooperative.

Collect mental clues. Take note of the invader or invaders’ heights, weights, hair color, distinguishing scars or tattoos, voice, accents, and any other clues you can gather.

Take inventory of loss. Do your best to remember the items the invaders took from your property.

After they’re gone, call the police right away. While your memory is fresh and the details are clear, make sure you talk to law enforcement right away. While you’re waiting for them to arrive on site, write down all the details you can remember. Your clues can help law enforcement in any subsequent investigation.

Home invasions are certainly unpredictable situations. But the one thing you can control is how you conduct yourself. Don’t give invaders any reason to escalate the situation and resort to extreme measures.

Use these few tips and advice to protect you, your family and especially your most prized possession… Your Home!! From a Home Invasion!

For most people, vacations are a time for relaxation and enjoyment. They travel near or far seeking restful respite from a myriad of daily distractions. In view of the significant price tags exacted for most temporary excursions, it is only natural to desire maximum recreational and relaxation value. Nagging worry about the state of things on the home front can negate vacationing pleasure, however.

The thought of intruder invasion into the sanctity of one’s home is never a pleasant contemplation. Nonetheless, it is an ever-present eventuality that all rational householders must realistically face. Making proactive plans and taking prudent precautions go far to enhance peace of mind and enjoyment while vacationing.

Sophisticated, expensive alarm systems are not mandatory for maximizing home security while vacationing. Believe it or not, criminals can circumvent such systems with relative ease. Many other solutions exist that offer far more economy and practicality.

First, it is important to understand that many would-be burglars target homes via covert surveillance. Known as “casing” a house, such illicit observation is often conducted over extended periods of time. By so doing, thieves ascertain homeowners’ regular routines, then move in for the kill at an “opportune” time. To effectively counteract this, you should avoid the appearance of absence from your home.

Lighting

A lack of lighting may be the most visible indicator of absence. Interior lighting from lamps, televisions, or other such devices can be controlled by pre-set timers. These economical tools create the illusion of presence. They can be programmed to activate devices at specific times for predetermined intervals.

Motion sensors in exterior lighting of areas such as porches, driveways, and home entrances is exceptionally wise. Installation of these devices around exterior home perimeters so as to illuminate rear yard areas will serve as major thief deterrents.

On a related note, set your home phone to ring no more than 3-4 times per call before your answering mechanism activates. Phones that ring incessantly are a sure sign of homeowner absence.

Your Good Neighbors

Hopefully you have a healthy relationship with neighboring householders. If so, they can provide invaluable aid in your home security efforts while you are gone. Enlist a nearby homeowner to park a vehicle in your driveway at night.

Arrange for your mail and newspaper deliveries to be placed on temporary hold during your vacation‘s duration. If this is not possible, ask a neighbor to collect these items from your yard or mailbox and safely retain them until you return.

More Miscellaneous Mentions

Some common-sense tips include not leaving spare keys lying around your premises, locking all doors and windows, and engaging any existing security alarms. If you have very valuable items that you cannot take along with you, rent a safety deposit box for temporary storage.

Many householders even display “Beware of the Dog” or alarm company signage and stickers, even if they have no pets or alarm. Employing such devices may be a good strategy for beating would-be burglars at their own dishonest designs.

As our world becomes ever more social, the dangers we unknowingly put ourselves in increase. Here’s a quick look at what not to do when connecting with your "followers."

You’ve heard it again and again over the last decade. You may have heard it from your parents, or maybe you tell your own children: don’t give away too much information over the Internet. As email revolutionized the way we communicate and as instant messaging sprouted up and replaced simple telephone calls, one truth remained. Now as those once ground-breaking technologies seem pretty unimpressive, we have also loosened up on our privacy. But you should never make information too easily accessible. Be it your name, your phone number, or your address. It seems that as technology has evolved we have become less skeptical about what we pass over the Internet and what we are willing to tell complete strangers. I still remember creating my very first email account. My parents warily warned me that it shouldn’t contain my last name. We’ve seen the horror stories on “To Catch A Predator.” Children can get themselves into dangerous situations just by giving simple shreds of information like where they go to school, what grade they’re in and their first name.

Any parent with a curious kid and high speed Internet deals with daily safety concerns. Many people utilize fake, but convincing profiles to victimize children and with as little information as their first name, age and school, they will know where your child is between 8:00AM and 3:00PM every single day of the week. With only those three pieces of information, they can even find out where you live. It’s an extreme case, as is identity fraud, but no one can argue that it doesn’t happen.

There’s a new reason to be weary of sharing too much on the web. Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and countless other social media sites have proven that social media is here to stay. It’s never been easier to make hundreds of friends effortlessly, whether they’re from around the block or around the globe. It’s also never been easier to keep track of everyone so flawlessly. Photo sharing, status updates and detailed posts (public posts, might I add) has transformed a simple social site infrastructure into an informational gold mine. What some call “pointless chatter,” others call an opportunity.

The recent economic downturn our country has faced and continues to face, and not so eloquently I might add, has caused a lot of unruliness. Unemployment rates are ever-climbing, as much as 15% in some cities, and where there’s unemployment there is a lot of hungry mouths. It’s not right but it’s a fact, crime increases as the economy declines. An innocent tweet or status update could just be your way of having fun, or your obnoxious attempt at bragging that you’re going to Tahiti for two weeks and your friends aren’t. Either way, it’s more dangerous than you think. It turns out that social media sensations like Facebook and Twitter are not only a concern when it comes to identity theft, but they’re also a huge home security nightmare.

If you do a Google search for “Twitter and burglary” you can find dozens of stories that go a little something like this: TwitterUser tweeted that he’s going out of town (finally!), but when he gets home he realizes that maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to tell the world that his home would be vacant for the next few days. His home had been broken into and thousands of dollars of damages were incurred. One only wonders what his insurance company thought about that. It may be tempting, but don’t post revealing messages about your whereabouts, it’s a burglar’s (or stalker’s) dream. If you really want to invoke mass jealousy over your awesome tan just post pictures when you get back. After all, no one envies the victim of burglary.

As technology evolves dangers increase, but it’s also easier to stay safer. More families are investing in their safety than ever before. As crime rates soar and technology advances, people are making home security and personal safety their business. ADT home security has made it their business for 131 years and currently helps keep more than 7 million homeowners and business owners safer, protecting their homes and businesses, as well as what’s really matters, what and who is inside. This industry-leader provides unrivaled 24/7 monitoring utilizing advanced technology and quality, dependable service. So even if you let it slip out of sheer excitement that you’re going to be out of reach for awhile, and even if that information gets into the wrong hands, you’ll have the peace of mind that comes from professional 24/7 home security monitoring.

Be safe out there.

It is probably no surprise to learn that each year there is an increase in the number of security surveillance systems that people are installing to monitor and protect their homes. This is in part due to the fact that people are spending less and less time at home but still want to feel safe when they get home at the end of a long day. At the same time, neighbors are less likely nowadays to be home either, and even less inclined to be keeping an eye on the goings-on in the neighborhood.

These situations have combined to make home security alarm systems more desirable to people, and to cope with rising crime in many areas of the country. People feel less safe even when they are in their homes because of increasing crime trends. This is particularly true when the reported crimes start to encroach into neighborhoods that had once been thought of as very safe.

Another reason for the rise in popularity of security surveillance equipment for the home is that it has become much more affordable because of the great technological advancements that have been made. So, even average homeowners can afford to have a system that also includes such features as remote video surveillance.

In addition, there are even portable home security surveillance systems that have more recently come on the market for those who rent a home or an apartment, so they too can have a home security system. Most of these portable systems use wireless video surveillance cameras, so they are easy to install and also very easy to remove and reinstall at a new location as needed.

Another advantage of these wireless surveillance camera systems is that the installation costs are much lower than the traditional hard-wired security systems. In fact, many people are able to install these kinds of systems themselves, which once again helps to make them more affordable.

Home Security Surveillance Systems are most often used to monitor the happenings around the exterior of the home. This allows the homeowner to know what is happening on their property, which is especially helpful if there has been evidence of an intrusion of some type. However, simply having an operating network of surveillance cameras can be a huge deterrent to crime in and of itself.

These surveillance camera systems can also be used to keep an eye on things going on inside the home. This can be helpful in a game room type setting where teenagers like to gather but want to be away from adult supervision. They can also be used in the case of having a babysitter in the home, as there have been many reported incidents of an abusive babysitter being caught by camera video surveillance, and many include audio surveillance.

Innovations keep coming, and one of the most popular advances in security surveillance systems is the homeowner’s ability to remotely view the video streams right over the internet. Because of this powerful surveillance software application, a homeowner can watch the video feeds from their cameras no matter where they happen to be, as long as they have access to a high speed internet connection.
