His name is Mark Shurtleff and exemplifies these qualities and I am proud to call him a friend and now a mentor… because of the opportunity to sit down with Mark in his office for a “private” get to know the CyberHood Partners Dave and Bill meeting, and also to do well over an hour interview with him on our live CHWradio.com show on Tuesday the 26th…

What I learned in those 2 hours is that we are pretty much the same type of people, (Responsible) we were both raised by loving parents and grandparents that taught us both about being good and honest, teaching us about respect, and to love one another and that our families come first right after God and our Country… and that this great land was built of the principles of our Forefathers… and that Justice will prevail and that the truth will set us FREE! These are great lessons to learn when you are young and your parents can only do so much to impart these life lessons, then it is left up to us to choose for ourselves how we treat our fellow man… and HOW we SERVE them as well!!!

Thanks again Mark for sharing your wisdom and knowledge with our listeners, but especially showing me very personally by your own example that fighting the good fight is what we have to do !!!

and continue to do so if we want to change the wrongs in this state, and also this great land that we all call home, and especially to learn how to “Bridge the Gaps” of Communication Breakdown… of our most important relationships…

Friend to Friend

Employee to Boss

Husband to Wife

Government to the People

Country to Country

and yes!

Parent to Child….

Learn what it takes to become a Responsible CyberCitizen and why the Attorney General Mark Shurtleff supports:

Web Browsers: A hacker’s easiest entrance…

Today’s web browsers spend as much time running on your computer as the operating system does. Windows sits in the background while you do all your word processing, web surfing, banking, receiving entertainment, and all manner of other tasks through the view of Internet Explorer or Firefox. The day of Internet hosted word processors and other programs that were once installed on our systems has increased the amount of time web browsers remain open and active. This increase also introduces another entrance through which a malicious hacker might gain access to and control over your system.

Accessing a maliciously designed website with low security settings on your web browser is enough to infect you with Trojan horses, viruses, spyware, or other backdoor creating programs. An unprotected web browser on an unprotected PC can become infected within minutes of connecting to the Internet. You can defend your PC and your surfing experience by locking down your web browser and controlling what features you allow to function. Taking this control now will prevent another virus writer taking control of it later.

ActiveX - These controls are generally created to provide specific, added functionality to a web site or other application. The downside is if they are not properly secure they can allow access to your PC even if you are not using them. Avoid these when you can.

Java - A platform independent programming language designed to allow programmers to write one set of code that will work on any computer. These are a little more difficult to exploit than ActiveX, but that doesn’t mean impossible.

Plug-ins - Most frequently seen in Firefox, these applications are little add-ons that enhance your web browsers functionality. The same cautions apply to these: if the developer did not design with security or compatibility in mind these can become the doorway through which your machine is attacked. Only install plug-ins from sources you trust. Treat them like applications.

Cookies - These little text files are designed to identify you to specific web sites and ease your use of them. If the web site recognizes your cookie you don’t have to log in and can access the web site quicker after the first visit. These items can be dangerous if someone steals your cookies and starts pretending to be you.

Scripting Languages (VB, Java) - Scripting languages can add functionality and interactivity to an otherwise bland media. However, adding this functionality can introduce additional vulnerabilities.

Disabling or requiring special permission of these functions from your web browsers will take you several steps closer to a secure surfing environment. Unless you are actively using content that requires the features, they provide only bells and whistles that are usually unnecessary for the average web experience.

Review your browser’s documentation. Learn how to disable and enable these features at will. If you are in control of when full browser functionality is enabled, you have control of that all important window of opportunity.

Protesters will gather today in Manhattan to greet attendees of the third annual “RFID in Fashion” conference, an event organized to promote the use of RFID in clothing and footwear. Dr. Katherine Albrecht, the Harvard-educated privacy campaigner featured in the film “Freedom to Fascism” and co-author of the bestselling book “Spychips,” will be on-hand to speak to attendees arriving for the opening keynote this afternoon at NYC’s Fashion Institute of Technology.

The conference features two days of speeches and events to advance apparel-industry uses for controversial Radio Frequency Identification or RFID technology. Past attendees include New Balance Athletic Shoes, Reebok, Levi Strauss, American Apparel, Liz Claiborne, and Jockey, along with retail outlets The Limited, Timberland, and Dillard’s.

Albrecht planned today’s protest after discovering the conference would promote the use of RFID in individual clothing items. Known as “item-level tagging,” the practice of placing RFID tags on consumer
items (rather than on crates or pallets in a warehouse) has been widely condemned by privacy and security experts.

Experts caution that such tags pose huge privacy and safety risks to the public. Used to track inventory in warehouses, RFID tags can easily be used to track people as well – a fact that can be exploited by marketers, government agencies, and criminals. IBM, for example, has patented RFID “person tracking units” for placement in walls and floors to allow marketers and government agents to secretly monitor people’s movements. They suggest using the devices in public spaces like shopping malls, theaters, elevators, and restrooms once RFID is implemented at the item level.

“Consumers shouldn’t have to worry about tracking devices being sewn into the seams of their clothing or pressed into the soles of their shoes,” said Albrecht. “We are putting apparel and RFID companies on notice that consumers will protest any item-level use of RFID on apparel.”

In 2003, Albrecht’s consumer group CASPIAN led a successful boycott against Italian clothing manufacturer Benetton. The resulting worldwide opposition forced the company to cancel plans to sew millions of RFID tags into women’s garments.

“Consumer awareness and opposition to RFID has grown exponentially since 2003,” Albrecht said. “Any U.S. company foolish enough to use RFID on apparel will face stiff repercussions.”

Hi Everyone,

db Security Inc. is launching, http://ResponsibleCyberCitizen.net (RCC), Thursday, July 31st, 2008.
db Security Inc. founders, Bill Wardell and David C. Ballard, said, “Our first grass roots goal is to entrust one cybercitizen from each state as a representative in their respective community, you’ll find your state under “Groups” in “RCC North America”. The RCC community looks forward to building a relationship with you.

We’re wondering which state will have the first and most Responsible CyberCitizens. Don’t count us - we already got a head start.

Dave and Bill

If you’ve heard us on CHWradio.com, then you know, we’ll also share with you our guest’s wisdom; it’s all part of being a RCC.

We’re building relationships, that build a community, that build an effective voice for change, for the well being of your children, their parents, professionals, and the preservation of a safe Internet.

We Welcome You…

Security on the Internet means more than just protecting your personal computer from online predators and viruses. If you own a domain or have a website you may need to protect your online reputation as well as your content.

The web pages you see when you browse the Internet with Internet Explorer or Firefox is not all there is to see out there. Your web browser reads pages written in a language called HTML and interprets instructions for formating, placement, and file retrieval. The web browser shows you the interesting, full-color, animated, graphical version of a file of text references. The text and images you see are not the whole story. Hidden within the HTML pages are keywords and instructions aimed specifically at search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN Search.

Here is a great tool that is essential for website owners called CopyScape. This tool allows webmasters to enter the URL of their individual pages, and will conduct a search for content from within those pages.

These hidden sections can be in a few places within the HTML file where search engines look for relevant data that allows them to index each site and retrieve the page and links to it when a user searches for the right keywords. It is in this practice that some porn sites use non-porn keywords or even steal non-porn content to force their sites to appear in more searches.

Suppose for instance you own a site dedicated to camping gear and the ideal camping locations in the northeast United States. Now, suppose your website gets a fairly high amount of traffic from legitimate users who are actively seeking the information you provide. Now suppose you perform the same search your users might and you see links to porn sites on the third, fourth, or even the first page of results. How did those porn sites become associated with your content? Chances are, it is not your fault and it is not a coincidence. One way for your site to become associated with porn sites is called Page Jacking.

Page Jacking works like this:

1) A porn site designer creates or steals a legitimate web page with content non-porn consumers might want. This information is usually stolen in part or in whole from other sites simply because it is easier to steal content than devise your own.

2) The porn site then uses non-porn keywords in the meta-tag section of the HTML file and submits the legitimate content with meta-tags to the various search engines for indexing.

3) When web pages are indexed the web spiders review the information submitted and index it according to the stolen content and meta-tags.4) A user performs a search for the legitimate information, maybe even using some form of the camping site url and begins clicking the results.

5) An unsuspecting user, basing his clicking decisions on the innocuous nature of the search terms and the first few pages of results, may click a link that looks promising and be redirected to a porn site, completely different from what he wanted.

What makes this particular scenario so difficult to police is that it is difficult for the search engine developers to police such content. The original indexing method of using strictly the meta tags to determine what content a site holds has been changed to scanning and indexing the first few lines of text in the user-viewable HTML. This is where Page Jacking becomes insidious. The porn site owners know the first few lines of their content is scanned for relevant information, so they use those sections to store non-porn content for indexing before presenting their porn content. Some designers may even have the content of both porn and non-porn data on the same HTML page by hiding the non-porn content from view.

This tricks the search engines into believing the site is non-porn related and presenting only the content they think you requested.

The only way to combat this type of theft is to police the search results. Most search engines have some method of doing this, but they cannot catch everything. Many website owners have taken to performing their own searches using their URL, their own meta-tag keywords, and various other content specific search terms to monitor and catch porn sites using their content. If found, these porn sites can be reported to the search engine companies and are generally removed from the indexes.

However, this is a very reactive way of addressing this as all the porn site owners have to do is steal more content from a different site and the process begins again. At this time there is no definitive way to prevent this type of theft. Like all methods of home and PC security, it requires diligence and attention to detail by you to protect your content and the associations made by others with your content. Help prevent this by reporting to your state and local officials… also get signed up for Managed PC Care.
