The stones in an eternity ring are generally channel set, which means that they are recessed as an inlay pattern in a wedding band rather than held in place by the prong or clawed settings seen on other types of wedding bands and fashion rings. They are most often channel set into traditional bands of yellow gold or white gold, but platinum, palladium, tungsten, and titanium Eternity Rings are becoming quite widely available as well.

There are 2 basic types of eternity bands, full eternity bands and half eternity bands. The channel set stones of a full eternity band completely encircle the band with stones in the same size and cut, which results in a continuous pattern. These types of eternity rings are the most beautiful, valuable, and symbolic as eternity wedding rings go, though it is known that they can be a challenge to resize due to the specific size and number of gemstones needed to properly fill the channels and maintain the pattern. A half eternity ring, though not as valuable or dramatic as full eternity rings, still makes a lovely impression with a pattern or stones set into half of the band, the top half worn at the back of the hand. This works fine because this side is usually the only part anyone else sees or pays attention to, and a smooth band on the underside of the finger makes eternity rings slightly more comfortable to wear. With this particular style, the gems are set to only encircle the visible part of the band. They cost less than full eternity rings which make them a good option if a full one is outside your means, you wear a large size of ring, and such. They are also easier to size since no refitting or addition of gems is required; a jeweler can simply break and resolder the plain interior section of the band as usual.
Diamond eternity rings for men are another growing trend, as either wedding rings to be worn on the day of the wedding and thereafter, and given by wives to their husbands as anniversary gifts or “upgrades” to simpler wedding bands on a special occasion like a anniversary or birthday.
