Latest Furniture Design Trends: London Design Festival

Are the current furniture design crazes high up on your list of interests? Industry publications and websites may be the best source of fresh gossip, but when it comes to furniture design, it fails miserebly. To find out about the latest crazes, visit design festivals: they are still the far best place for people of your interests. In less than a month, Britain’s capital will be hosting one of the biggest and most famous design festivals worldwide, London Design Festival. Established only in 2003, the festival is recognized and attended by thousands of design professionals from all around the world. Festival is the right expression – London Design Festival consist of more than 200 events, spread all around the city. It’s a real festivity of design originality and cultural freedom. It’s a real shame that there’s no time to see all the events. One has to choose with care which to visit. To help you with this task, as a furniture professional from Toronto I have put together a short list of the most interesting events that shouldn’t be missed by anyone who is planning on vising this festival.
Current furniture
The New Modernists
The sole British agent for the leading top European furniture producers, Viaduct, will be celebrating its 20th anniversary at London Design Festival. The list of designers involved is huge, including Maarten Van Severen, Bertjan Pot, Studio Job, Stefan Diez, Arik Levy and many others. If you want to know something about contemporary furniture, you can study it there. I would even say it’s my favorite.
Molteni & C
Molteni & C have partnered up with Foster + Partners, cooperation that produced for example the Arc Table. The partnership intended to create exceptional quality furniture, concentrating on design and engineering. Also, Molteni & C will launch Sofa Chats on 24th September to celebrate and debate the impact of Italian design.
Exclusive furniture
Armani/Casa
Armani/Casa are fighting back against the modernist by presenting a wide range of luxuriosu pieces of furniture. Armani/Casa working exclusively with Rubelli will introduce a brand new collection of fabrics. If you demand exclusive interiors, you should start here.
Natuzzi
Italian design has always been one of the most respected in the world of furniture, which once again is proven by the fantastic exhibition of Natuzzi. Leather is the main choice this year, but there will be much more to see than sofas only. Natuzzi (celebrating the 50th anniversary this year) exhibits the use of leather in a wide selection of products from sculpture to photography.

Eyes On Spanish Design
Spanish creativity will be demonstrated by exhibitions of 9 leading designers, which will showcase their attitude to current trends in furniture and decorative trends. There will be contrasting variations of nontraditional production processes including the use of simple shapes and unusual materials focusing on sustainable and recyclable materials.
100% Norway
If you need to cool down after digesting the works of the southern professionals, try it at this exhibition, organized with the cooperation of the Royal Norwegian Embassy, the Norwegian Design Council, InsideNorway and Innovation Norway. At this display, you will be able to see a selection of current commercial products and also some prototype designs that have yet to be introduced to the open market.
Experimental furniture
Grassworks
What is Grassworks? Go to see Jair Straschnow display and be amazed by his very unusual creations. It will not be a waste of time! Bamboo shoot furniture, constructed using very little screws or glue is simple and easy to assemble at home. After so many previous displays of various shapes and sizes, this will be a nice and relaxing experience.
Working On Time
A new range of innovative furniture will be launched by Lamm, which will be hosted by The Segal Group. ‘On Time’ is represented by folding chairs, which are able to provide comfort together with high flexibility (let’s hope that one day they will replace the horrible chairs we know from our universities). The concept of a table that can be folded and stored away is a very attractive option for the ’stay-at-home’ worker.
Installations
White Light
Good interior designers are pretty useless if they cannot be seen at their best. Therefore, lighting is one of the most important factors when staging a property (using professionals). White Light installation combines lighting, furniture and film. Slamp, AVMazzega, Varaschin and Fratelli Boffi decided to come together to present the best.
Colour Creativity and Verner Panton
The ‘Montana System’ of Peter Lassen has thousands of combinations and is the world’s most versatile storage system. With the help of Verner Panton’s lighting, he is going to showcase the juicy color palette of his system.
