Her debit card used for online shopping

Her debit card used for …but card holder not the user
By Janice Tai, February 10, 2007

IF you think that your credit and debit cards can be misused only after they have been stolen, think again.

The 48-year-old housewife, who only wanted to be known as Mrs Lee, didn’t lose her debit card.

But she was shocked to find that someone had used it for online purchases.

Over three days, three were made from her account, she claimed, chalking up a total of $432.

All three transactions were made online and were for payment of air tickets from a budget airline.

One of them was for a ticket from Medan to Jakarta, she later found out.

‘I was puzzled because I did not make those transactions. I even called up my daughter in the US to double check that they were not made by her,’ she said.

Curious to know how someone could have used her debit account to make payments even though she had not lost the card, her husband, Mr Lee, 49, said he called DBS Bank, which issued her card.

What he found out surprised him: All one needed to make a transaction online is information that could easily be read from the card - its owners’ name, card number and expiry date. Read more.

OSA Editorial Comments:

This goes back to my main issue, if can’t stop them then how cam we even stand a chance! If we don’t start making the Cyber Criminals pay with real punishment or real jail time, and until we start to say: “enough is enough” or scream out from the rooftops that “Were not going to Take IT Anymore!!”

We as an Internet family have to band together and force politicians, the Federal Government, and International leaders to make changes in how we treat .
