Protecting Children, Not Predators, Should Come First

I often watch wildlife programs on cable, and whenever these shows focus on how animals hunt their prey, the animal’s instinct is to focus on the youngest and the weakest. In our society, there is a growing species of predator that prey on our youngest and weakest: children.
These animals are called pedophiles and child sex offenders. Given the danger these animals pose to our children, you would think any law enforcement official would do everything within their power to put them in the cages of our prison system.
Except in Murphy, Texas, where Collin County District Attorney John Roach recently dropped all charges for 24 men who were caught on tape trying to meet underage children as part of “NBC Dateline’s ‘To Catch a Predator‘ ” program.
For the past several years, I have used my talk radio show to applaud NBC, reporter Chris Hansen, and the online watchdog group Perverted Justice (www.Perverted-Justice.com) for smoking out pedophiles and calling attention to the dangers these animals pose to our children and our communities. Their hidden camera investigations and the on-camera confessions they’ve secured have given the public a sobering view of the twisted desires of pedophiles. To date, over 200 cases have been prosecuted because of this program.
Murphy, Texas, however, became the first community in the nine “To Catch a Predator” stings that have declined to press charges from these stings. The mayor, Bret Baldwin, and Roach have spent more energy being outraged over the “Dateline” program than the fact that there were two dozen men caught on tape whose actions and on-air confessions to Chris Hansen clearly posed a threat to kids.
