Journey

Feb. 9, 2006 — Fifteen-year-old “Debbie” is the middle child in a close-knit Air Force family from suburban Phoenix, and a straight-A student — the last person most of us would expect to be forced into the seamy world of sex trafficking.

But Debbie, which is not her real name, is one of thousands of young American girls who authorities say have been abducted or lured from their normal lives and made into . While many Americans have heard of human trafficking in other parts of the world — Thailand, Cambodia, Latin America and eastern Europe, for example — few people know it happens here in the United States.

The estimates that well over 100,000 children and young women are trafficked in America today. They range in age from 9 to 19, with the
average age being 11.

And many victims are no longer just runaways, or kids who’ve been abandoned. Many of them are from what would be considered “good” families, who are lured or coerced by clever predators, say experts. “These are particularly adept at reading children, at reading kids, and knowing what their vulnerabilities are,” said FBI Deputy Assistant Director, Chip Burrus, who started the Lost Innocence project, which specializes in child- and teen-sex trafficking. This is incredibly sad, and it’s so hard to believe it happens so close to home. How do the parents not know? How do we let things like this go on in our own backyard?

“9-19 – 100000 children” the numbers make you feel sick. I just can’t comprehend how this has gone unnoticed for so long. What is being done on a higher level to protect kids?

Agreed, what I want to know is how these people wind up sold as concubines without the FBI finding them. Is there like, an internet service provider that caters specifically to these bastards?

This sex trafficking thing is not only a problem on US but for the whole world. Here we have our own story of sex slaves. Most of the sex workers are coming from the province. They are being promises a good job on the city but when they do get there then that is the only time that they will learn the true nature of their job.

WOW, I knew that sex traffic was huge everywhere, and I knew that we had it in the states, but I definitely didn’t know that it’s that many children. I’m not much older than them, I’m about to turn 23. That’s crazy that these kids are being abducted and then sold as sex slaves. What is this world coming to?

The saddest part of all this is that of the childrens lives, but why don’t more people know? As I have learned, they don’t want to know! They say they don’t want to put these things in their minds, which I can understand to a certain point, but if you have children or loved ones…this is something you HAVE to know about! These are serious things…and not to be taken lightly!

More people need to be aware of the growing and largely unknown sex trade and sex trafficking going on right under our noses! No longer will I look at a woman, who seems to be pimping herself out, in the same light! She might just be one of the victims of human traffickers.

The teen agers are prone to such incidents.one has to be very careful.Parents must constantly observing them.Else most of them would deviate. This is an important stage in their life. They must not allow others to seduce them.Only self discipline is the key for this problem.

I can’t believe this is happening so close to home, shouldn’t more be done to stop it?

i was raped about a year ago. that for me was a devastating experience that i will never forget. i feel that if more people, especially todays young parents, know about this issue it would help greatly. stop trying to shelter kids. i am 15 and if i would have known this before i could have prevented it. put the fear of God into teenagers these days. if thats what it takes to get through to them then so be it.
