By Online Security Authority on Apr 5, 2009 in Shopping Security
Nowadays, you do not need to go out and get dressed just to buy something. All you need is an Internet connection and a computer and you are now ready to shop till your eyes pop out. The beauty of cyber world shopping is that you can easily look for bargains because you have the whole world at your fingertips. Shopping on the World Wide Web is indeed fast, easy and hassle-free.
One major concern that many online shoppers have raised is safety. You might have read on the news that there are many unscrupulous individuals who are using the Net to steal money and identity. Thus, if you want to take advantage of the ease and speed of shopping via the World Wide Web, you need to take precautionary measures to keep your personal and financial information safe and secure.
Here are some tips that you ought to follow when shopping online:
Take Time To Know More About The Merchant
The first thing you have to do, when you are shopping online, is to get to as many details as possible about the merchant. If it is your first time to shop on the Internet, it is best to transact business with reputable online stores. However, if you want to participate on an online auction, you need to be more careful in checking out the seller’s reputation.
Things you need to look for in an online store are the company history or description, terms of service and a contact address. Take time to visit forums to see what others have to say about the online store you are planning to transact business with. You can also ask your family and friends for feedback if they have bought something from the cyber store you are eyeing on. Get software to help you with the 10 Online Shopping Safety Tips!
Carefully Read Descriptions And Other Information
Although there may be pictures of the product you are planning to buy, you still need to carefully read the descriptions provided by the seller. Details like the height, thickness, weight, size and color may not be very obvious in a two-dimensional picture.
You need to be extra careful in dissecting the details if you are buying from an auction or second-hand shops. The words like mint condition, vintage, slightly used, or antique must be taken in consideration.
Know What The Privacy Policy Of The Company Or Store
You need to protect your personal information so you need to ensure if the data you are going to supply the merchant will be treated privately. If it is not stated explicitly on the website that the details you provide will not be sold or distributed to others, then you might have to think twice about dealing with that particular merchant. You see, some sellers trade contact information of their customers.
Don’t Divulge Unnecessary Information
You need to know what information is needed and what details are not necessary in transacting with online shops. Of course, name, address, contact number and payment details are all needed before you can close a sale. However, do not give details such as your SSS number, Pin or password, and other details that you think are too personal or revealing.
Be Keen On All The Details
Since the products that you bought will be shipped or delivered to you, you need to know details like date of shipment, expected date of delivery, what freight service was contracted, policy on refund, and other pertinent information.
Save or Print Transaction Records
Paper trail is important when buying online. Just in case things get out of hand, you have proof of your transaction. It is wise to either save an electronic copy of your transaction or a printed proof of the sale. Remember that online stores cannot issue receipts or proof of purchase, so you have to be proactive when it comes to keeping records.
Don’t Be Afraid To Ask
If you do not understand the policy of the company, clarify some details or make some requests, do not be afraid to write the store or merchant. Actually, this will also give you an opportunity to know more about the seller. If the reply was prompt and the letter was professionally written, then somehow you can be certain that you will also be dealt with promptly and professionally.
Compute The Costs
The problem with online shopping is that there are so many hidden costs. So you need to carefully compute all the costs and see whether you are really saving a lot of money on your purchases. If you seller is from another country, shipping cost can be very high, so be careful.
Use Debit Or Credit Card
Do not pay in cash. It is always wise to use your credit or debit card because there will be paper trail and records.

Great tips. So many people are extremely hesitant to shop online, especially due to security issues.
Something else I’ve found important is checking their return policy. Problems with items seem to be more frequent with online shopping, probably due to their journey through shipping and such. Many places will exchange items when they’ve made a mistake, but won’t pay for return shipping… other places will.
