Our final post will dive into one of the biggest hubs for rip-offs and scams online, eBay. Since its inception, people have taken advantage of trusting buyers on eBay and other auction sites. Unfortunately, there have been several cases of murder, theft and other crimes that have occurred as a direct result of relationships formed through Craigslist. Even such horrifying things as the “Craigslist Killer” have been spotlighted on the news. When you accept the terms and conditions of the site, you release Craigslist from all responsibility for such occurrences. Therefore, it’s up to you to be smart about the interactions you choose to make. In more than one of these cases, children were involved in the crimes. Most of these crimes can be traced to users not being smart about sharing personal information.

Of course, internet crime is not usually violent crime, it tends to be more along the lines of destruction of property, through viruses and worms, and thefts through the use of scams and ID theft. But these crimes are highly destructive to people’s lives, as well, and need to be taken just as seriously as any other.

Many popup scam sites like to claim that your computer has “3 trojans, 4 viruses, and a nasty cough on the side.” Don’t click on the link for free or discount virus removal software (unless you enjoy visits to the computer technician). In fact, clicking on any popups at all is precarious to the health of your laptop (and sanity).
