STEPS TO REDUCE BINGE DRINKING AMONGST TEENS
By OSAblogger on Aug 24, 2009 in Teen Guidelines
Drinking by minors has long been a source of aggravation by adolescents since the turn of the century. Unfortunately, it is not only constant drinking that is a problem, but the method of drinking – binge drinking. It has become a high health risk to teens and ultimately a big factor in deaths in teens .
Laws are being passed allowing the authorities to be able to break up social events and then check for officers of the law who are incognito when it is a known factor that certain homes are allowing underage drinking to be taken place. Once discovered , the teens are being given a breathalyzer, and the person providing the alcohol, if an adult, is also charged. This is a new step in trying to wage the war on underage drinking – hitting the adults whether it be the house where the event is taking place or the younger adults who purchase alcohol for these teens . Even if the adults have no knowledge that there is a party going on in their home, they are suffering the consequences legally.
These fines can range past $2,500 or more. Every state has a legal drinking age, usually 21 and under and it is a criminal offense . Of course, whether these laws are enforced or not is questionable at best . With laws indicating that they can fine anyone over 21 who is at the get-together and acknowledges underage drinking to go on, parents included, the police will be able to handle the offense right at the scene, just like a traffic ticket.
It is time that parents and adults get on the ball as it is necessary for them to live up to their duties . breathalyzerss have been coming to light on the home front so that parents can find out if their teens are out drinking or drinking in the home. It may sound like a mistrust issue , but the issue has to be addressed to protect these kids from themselves . Due to their testing the waters with drugs and alcohol, their knowledge and expertise is extremely limited and unfortunately, some are paying the price with their lives . The National Research Council Institute of Medicine found that billions of dollars are costing the nation due to car crashes at an elevated rate.
We have to raise awareness of the situation and the impact this is having on our teens. Parents have to be made aware of the role they play and how they need to direct their kids . There are many places who are establishing a movement of social awareness in this vent.
