At some point in someone’s existence, hiring a lawyer may be compulsory, depending on what the situation calls for and the severity of the case incurred. Of course, one would always love to have the best attorney. And just like any other learned professional, lawyers have definite fees for their services, and it should always be part of an upfront professional conversation.

Normally, lawyers’ fees greatly rely on the nature of your case, the extent of time needed for case research, number of appearances in court, and needed paperwork(s). The lawyer’s extraordinary reputation and amount of experience are also determining factors of the lawyer’s fees.

Aside from the factors stated above, lawyer’s asking price can vary depending on the type of agreement that you’ve chosen. Lawyers may be paid by the hour, with a fixed rate, with contingency fee, or percentage of cash proceeds.

The typical hourly rate of lawyers can range from 125$-250$ per hour. This is billed during consultations, whether in person or on the phone. When having consultation periods with your lawyer, it is important to strictly stick to the essentials and to not deviate from the topic. Avoid useless conversation, because time is of the essence, and the clock is beating every second, the charges will not change.

If it seems that the legal work will be ongoing, this is usually where the retainer fee is suggested, so as not to enlarge the legal bill even more. A flat monthly payment is set by the lawyer for a client who is bound to obtain several legal services. Every agreement should be written in order to avoid misunderstanding and disputes.

Every written deal should comprise the lawyer’s billing system and all other charges. If there are stipulations that you’d like to change, feel free to tell the lawyer so both parties can meet in the middle.

The most usual role of a retainer fee is to serve as down payment. The legal fees that will be charged by the lawyer as time goes by will be deducted from it. The agreement should stipulate if there will be interests on pending bills.

It is the client’s responsibility to occasionally verify the sum of bills in the report. Of course, if the retainer fee has already been consumed, the lawyer has a choice to ask for reinstatement should the service go on further.
